Alaska Units 16 and 17

METHOD

Baiting

When you hunt the Alaska Units #16 & #17, just southeast of Denali National Park, for Brown Bear you can capitalize on one of the longest seasons for Brown bear. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game office is promoting Brown Bear hunting in these units which benefits the hunters. They are now offering an earlier season opener that starts August 20th and does not close until the following spring on May 31st to coincide with the moose calving season. Along with this, all nonresidents can also harvest 2 Brown Bear and up to 3 Black Bear on their hunt.

The fall season opens 20 days earlier and stays open 5 days longer in the spring to coincide with the moose calving season. The spring hunts are conducted in Unit 16 along the Susitna River drainage. This is a huge forested region that the brown and black bears have flourished in for years all five species of Salmon spawn up the rivers that flow throughout the Unit providing health large bear populations.

What Should I Expect?

When you book an Alsaka brown bear hunt with Alaska Premier Outfitters you will hunt for some of the largest brown bears in Alaska. We hunt 2 distinctly different areas that we are constantly scouting for the largest bears. When you arrive at camp you can have confidence knowing that we have done the research and scouting to ensure we will get you into the bears.

We access the fall and late spring hunts with jet boats and hunt the hills that run along the river along with the back creeks. All five species of salmon spawn in this area so there are a lot of opportunities in finding bears along the river or up in the hills where they feed on berries. Early spring hunts are done in this same area and we access it using snow machines.

Hunting Methods

The primary method for hunting these big Alaskan bears is by baiting. Spot and stalk are ineffective due to the nature of the terrain. We use tree stands along with ground blinds to hunt these bait stations ensuring a better opportunity for a lethal shot.

This is a great hunt for serious archery hunters or clients that have trouble walking long distances.
